Overview

Problem

Type 2 diabetes affects nearly 25% of the VA's patient population and is the leading cause of of blindness, end stage renal disease and amputation. Solution

Empower Veterans to Actively Communicate and Engage in Shared Decision Making in Medical Visits. A 10-minute patient education video, Speak Up!, was developed to help patients use active communication in their medical visits by being prepared, asking questions, and speaking up!

Results

A randomized controlled trial of the Speak Up! video showed better self- efficacy and improvement of A1c. Self-efficacy to communicate was higher in patients who watched the Speak Up! video compared to the control group. Hemoglobin A1c was lower in patients who watched the Speak Up! video compared to the control group.

Metrics

  • Before watching the Speak Up! video, 42% felt their role with their provider was unclear.
  • After watching the Speak Up! video, 84% felt they have a better understanding of their role with their provider. 93% felt they were more likely to share their concerns with their provider. 95% felt they were more likely to ask their provider questions.

The Speak Up! video was funded and produced through VA's Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) funded study (IIR-442), "Empowering Veterans to Actively Communicate and Engage in Shared Decision Making, a randomized controlled trial". The script was developed by the ACTIVet2 study team: Howard S. Gordon, MD; Frances Weaver, Ph.D.; Kevin Str ... The Speak Up! video was funded and produced through VA's Health Services Research and Development Service (HSR&D) funded study (IIR-442), "Empowering Veterans to Actively Communicate and Engage in Shared Decision Making, a randomized controlled trial". The script was developed by the ACTIVet2 study team: Howard S. Gordon, MD; Frances Weaver, Ph.D.; Kevin Stroupe, Ph.D., Eleanor Rivera, Ph.D. RN, Sudha Bhoopalam, MD, Richard Street Jr., Ph.D., Lorie Jacob, MS, Pooja Solanki, MPH and Jessica Gardner, MPH. The ACTIVet2 study team comprises VA researchers and doctors from VISN 12 and Texas A&M University. It also has affiliations with the University of Illinois at Chicago and Loyola University Chicago. The Speak Up! video was filmed in June 2022 at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Simulation and Integrative Learning Institute (SAIL). SAIL is an integrated simulation center that utilizes a wide variety of simulation modalities for training health professionals. The Speak Up! video was filmed and edited by Kyle Hammond of KBH Media. The final video version was completed in January 2023.
