What is an Intrapreneur?

VHA Innovators Network (iNET) is a bustling community of employees united by a desire to solve health care problems and engage in shared learning. Our team of Innovation Specialists, facilitate local programming, lead local and national events, and connect employees with the resources they need to design, develop, and test their own solutions.  These employees became "intraprenuers", a person using the skills and initiative necessary to anticipate needs and bring new ideas to market. Our market, VA and the nation's Veterans.

Meet the Intrapreneur: Larry Hillson, Chief of Environmental Management Service

"We can work smarter, not harder. Developing this product opened me up to a large network and the depth of iNET support that VA offers when they bring an idea to the forefront. That was an eye-opener. It has allowed me to help others who have had similar innovations to steer them in the right direction. VA Innovation made me realize the VA is one of the biggest innovators out there in the nation's healthcare system! We are on the forefront of many new products in our industry!"

These innovative products were developed by VA employees through the VHA Innovators Network (iNET). They were either designed via the Spark-Seed-Spread Innovation Investment and Accelerator Program or co-created with external collaborators through the Greenhouse Initiative.

The VA Intrapreneurial Product Marketplace (VAIPM) now features products from the VA Technology Transfer Program (TTP) and the Office of Advanced Manufacturing (OAM).

TTP's mission is to facilitate the commercialization of VA inventions for the benefit of Veterans and the public. A key distinction of TTP is that most VA researchers collaborate closely with academic affiliates, resulting in jointly owned innovations. This partnership allows VA to work with numerous U.S. academic institutions while receiving funding from the NIH and DOD.

The OAM is pivotal in implementing advanced manufacturing technologies like 3D printing within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA). This implementation fosters quicker innovation and better access to tailored healthcare solutions for Veterans. OAM ensures patient safety and equitable access while providing high-quality training in advanced manufacturing technologies, achieving milestones such as in-house production of personalized medical devices.

VHA Innovators Network (iNET) is a bustling community of employees united by a desire to solve healthcare problems and engage in shared learning. Forty-four VA medical centers are a part of iNET and each site has their own innovation specialists who facilitate local programming, lead local and national events, and connect employees with the resources they need to design, develop, and test their own solutions.
