Share PrintIn November 2021, SoldierStrong donated Penumbra, Inc.'s REAL y-series, virtual reality (VR) devices that deliver immersive therapeutics designed to engage patients during their rehabilitation journey, supporting areas such as functional skills and cognition. To date, 18 VA medical facilities have received a donation of the REAL System, y-Series from SoldierStrong.

Overview
The problem
The conventional rehabilitation process is challenging and often lengthy and repetitive which adversely impacts a patient’s motivation. VR has emerged as a therapeutic tool to help transform the process, helping patients feel more engaged and yielding positive outcomes.

REAL System, y-Series activities support full body rehabilitation with a focus on strengthening, range of motion, and postural control for use with all rehab patients. Through the collaboration between VHA XR Network and SoldierStrong, 18 VA medical facilities are providing unique therapy to improve patient outcomes when it comes to rehabilitation. REAL System, y-Series’ activities promote physical rehabilitation and cognitive function through a series of applications viewed by the user through the device's VR headsets. Each application has multiple intensity levels focusing on range of motion, core and balance, and cognition. The system allows a therapist to supervise and customize activities, with data capturing data through the sensors as well.
