Teaching the Teacher: Faculty Development for VA Clinician Educators (TTT)

TTT is a discussion-based series for teaching physicians on inpatient wards at VA medical centers. We aim to augment teaching quality, efficiency, and confidence for VA clinician educators. We focus on high yield content based on a national needs assessment, and address topics such as understanding modern learners, utilizing technology to enhance teaching, providing high quality feedback, and incorporating evidence-based medicine into teaching practice.

We are excited to share this project with the greater VA education community, and are actively seeking to grow our team! Here's a list of our current facilitators:

The problem

Educating the next generation of health professionals is one of the four congressionally mandated statutory missions of the VA, but now more than ever before, the roles and responsibilities of the modern clinical educator are challenging and complex. Educating the next generation of health professionals is one of the four congressionally mandated statutory missions of the VA, but now more than ever before, the roles and responsibilities of the modern clinical educator are challenging and complex. Busy clinician educators are asked to juggle higher patient loads and more complex disease processes while simultaneously providing individualized and high quality teaching to health professions trainees. The VA is the largest educator of health professionals in the United States, and we are poised to be leaders in clinician education. Teaching faculty want and deserve dedicated VA training to optimize their confidence and skills in their roles as clinician educators.

The attached charts are from a national needs assessment of VA academic hospitalists gauging access to and interest in VA-specific clinician educator faculty development. While the vast majority of respondents stated interest in programming from the VA, only a minority have access. See more

Subject matter focuses on high yield content for academic hospitalists based on a national needs assessment, and includes topics such as understanding the unique perspectives and needs of modern learners, utilization of technology to enhance teaching, challenges and tips in providing high quality feedback, and incorporation of evidence-based medicine into teaching practice. The results

Over 30 faculty members at the originating facility and >50 faculty members (and counting!) at outside institutions have participated in the Teaching the Teacher series. We are actively collecting post-series evaluation surveys from participants. Reflections on the quality of the series and self-reported changes in behavior have been overwhelmingly positive. ... Interested VAs need only reach out to Laura Caputo at laura.caputo@va.gov or laura.caputo@duke.edu to schedule this innovation at their institution. Individual sites will be catered to on a first come first serve basis and will be scheduled as soon as possible to meet their institution's needs.
