REAL System for Rehabilitation

Share Print

This collaboration will help VA Immersive explore opportunities to adopt and incorporate immersive technologies into rehabilitation programs and evaluate 24/7 access to virtual reality (VR) experiences designed specifically for the user. This pilot allows providers to deliver rehabilitation care to Veterans and to expand access to care by providing VR-based rehabilitation care in community-based outpatient clinics, particularly within orthopedics, neurorehabilitation and chronic condition management (e.g., pain). It is cost effective but does not compromise the effectiveness of care.

Upon his return to the VA Central Iowa Health Care System, this Veteran found that David McAdon, a physical therapy assistant, and his team were tasked with building a VR program for Veterans. At the VA Central Iowa Health Care System, the team treated Veterans using VR and had many successes with Veterans that struggled with anxiety, depression, pain, physical and functional limitations and balance deficits. VR has helped provide Veterans with a new avenue to help decrease limitations and improve their quality of life. The landscape of VR is changing quickly so hours of research and demonstrations have been done to find the right equipment and experiences for Veterans. VA Central Iowa invested time to find the right VR system and over the last two years, the team developed this VR program into what it is today.
