Virtual Reality for Prevention of Sexual Harassment Training

Share Print

This empathy-based virtual reality (VR) training experience takes place from the perspective of someone who is navigating a VA Medical Center and encounters sexual harassment along the way. The innovation was built as a direct response to reports of harassment, both from Veterans and employees. The VR experience teaches the impact and power of bystander intervention and discourages harassing behavior.

As the Women Veterans Program Manager at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, Kathleen O’Loughlin constantly sought innovative ways to support the over 25,000 women Veterans under her care. Confronted with disturbing reports that one in four women faced harassment at VA Medical Centers, Kathleen recognized the need for a more effective training approach to counteract this pervasive issue. Leveraging her involvement in the XR Network and her collaboration with VA Immersive, she envisioned an empathy-driven VR solution. This training placed users directly in the shoes of those experiencing harassment, teaching the profound impact of bystander intervention.
